We all know the proverb “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. But not many of us know the actual benefits of having apples regularly.

Apples help in:

a) Reducing Cholesterol: Apples have “pectin” which reduces the “bad” cholesterol or LDL. Having two apples a day may help in reducing the cholesterol level by almost sixteen percent.

b) Strengthening bones: A flavonoid named “phloridzin” is present only in apples and is known to increase bone-density and prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Apples also contain Boron, which is known to possess a bone-strengthening property.

c) Treating Anemia: Apples are excellent sources of Iron, Phosphorus and Vitamin C and hence are extremely helpful in treating anemia.

d) Preventing Lung Cancer: “Quercetin” and “naringin” are two flavonoids present in high volumes in apples are believed to considerably reduce the risk of lung cancer.

e) Controlling Asthma: Kids suffering from asthma are seen to get lesser attacks if they regularly consume apple juice.

f) Losing weight: Eating apples while dieting is believed to be helpful in weight-reduction.

g) Preventing Alzheimer’s: The flavonoid “quercetin” is believed to have the ability to protect brain cells from the nature of free radical damage that may result in Alzheimer’s disease.

h) Managing Diabetes: The main component of the “pectin” in apples is Galacturonic Acid, which reduces the body’s insulin requirement and may assist in the control of diabetes.

i) Preventing Colon Cancer: The “pectin” in apples helps in the healthy maintenance of the digestive tract and lowers the threat of colon cancer.
