A study at a medical research center revealed that school-kids today lug books weighing more than 20% of their own body weight.
Doctors reckon that children, who carry more than 10% to 20% of their body weight everyday, become prone to back and neck problems.
To save children from such hazards, parents must teach them to:
ü Bend using both the knees when lifting or wearing a stuffed backpack. Bending at the waist to lift or wear a heavy backpack, day in and day out, can prove harmful.
ü Use both the shoulder straps to avoid curvature of the spine and muscle strain.
ü Pack the heaviest of the books closest to the body and fix the arm straps comfortably snug so that the backpack doest not hang down to reach the waist. Ideally the pack should sit 5 cm above the waist.
Parents should always buy kids backpacks with abdominal belts as these belts when fixed properly, distribute the weight of the backpack evenly ensuring that no body part is exposed to any extra bit of weight.
