Kolkata Knight Riders is the much-talked-about franchise of the eight-member Indian Premier League. As the name indicates, the team represents Kolkata and intends to attract the adventure-loving generation next.
The franchise is owned by Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., which has the Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, the Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jai Mehta as its co-owners. The team is captained by, the former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who also happens to be the Icon Player for the team. Mr. Joy Bhattacharya happens to be the CEO of the franchise while the team has the internationally acclaimed expert John Buchanan as the coach.
The official colors of the team are black and gold. Black represents the strength and courage of Goddess Kali and gold stands for the “spirit of winning”. The official song of the team is “Korbo, Lorbo, Jitbo Re” which means, “We will do it, fight for it, win it”. It is composed by the music-creating duo Vishal-Shekhar. The Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra has fashioned the team jersey.
The team logo shows a dazzling viking helmet, golden in color, against a black background. The logo also has the team name scripted in golden letters. The team mascot Hoog Lee is an adorable Royal Bengal Tiger who is addicted to burgers. The curious name “Hoog Lee” is a pun on “Hooghly”, the river.
Apart from Sourav Ganguly, who has been acquired in exchange of US$ 1,092,500, the team has batsmen like Ricky Ponting, Brad Hodge and David Hussey from Australia, Salman Butt from Pakistan and Indian state-level and Under-22 players like Akash Chopra and Debabrata Das. The bowling attack comprises of Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul from Pakistan, Ishant Sharma and Murali Kartik from Team India and domestic players like Ashok Dinda and Ranadeb Bose. The team also boasts of the wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum from New Zealand, wicketkeeper-batsman Tatenda Taibu from Zimbabwe, Ajit Agarkar from Team India and a few Indian state-level players like, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Wriddhiman Saha.
The physical training of the team is monitored by, Michael Buchanan and the former Team India trainer Adrian Le Roux. John Buchanan is being assisted in coaching by Matthew Mott while former Team India staff Andrew Leipus is the team’s physiotherapist.
The team Kolkata Knight Riders is also referred as “All the King’s Men”.
