There are a number of myths about how acne can be prevented.
They are:
a) One should avoid eating fatty foods like pastries, chocolates, soft drinks, burgers and fries if one wishes to prevent acne.
b) One should try to be stress-free and sleep well to avoid acne.
Some people might grow a tendency of having a severe burst of acne if they have fatty foods or if they are stressed. Though there is an absence of any proper scientific reason to support these beliefs, people noticing these tendencies in themselves are advised to avoid the suspected catalysts.
To prevent acne:
a) One should try to arrest the accumulation of oil on the face. This can be considerably managed by washing the face with the help of lukewarm water and a gentle soap. This is more helpful if it is done once on waking up in the morning and repeated on returning home at the end of the day. The washing or cleansing should be done very gently.
b) One should never scrub the face. Scrubbing can harm the sensitivity severely and it can open up pores wide, making matters worse.
c) All make-up should be taken off the face before washing the face. Otherwise, the make-up may block the pores.
d) One should be careful to use only that moisturizer, sunscreen or make-up, which is marked as “non-comedogenic” or “100% oil-free”.
e) One should tie-up long or bouncy hair to prevent it from touching the face frequently. Oil, dirt or dandruff from the hair will worsen acne. Washing the scalp and the hair frequently is also very important to prevent acne or to control the severity.
f) One might use drugs like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to prevent acne. But over-use of these often makes the skin very dry making matters worse.
